Benin City has a deep-rooted cultural heritage, and respect for elders is paramount. When addressing older men, refer to them as Epa and older women as Iye. The greetings for men and women are Epa Domo and Kòiye, respectively. This demonstrates respect and immediately wins you the locals’ favour.  It is easy to identify yourself as a newcomer to the land once you meet an older Bini person without using their initials.

RING ROAD: THE HEART OF THE CITY

Ring Road, also known as King square or Oba Ovonramwen Square, is the bustling center of Benin City. It serves as a major landmark and hub for transportation. It’s a chaotic yet vibrant hub filled with shops, traders, and transport vehicles. Items such as clothes and accessories and really cheap to get at this area especially during the night market. If by any chance you go missing in benin just find your way to ringroad and you would definitely be able to locate your destination. While it’s fascinating to explore, be cautious of pickpockets and the high traffic congestion, especially during rush hours.  

LATE NIGHT WALKS

While Benin City can be generally safe during the day, some areas can be risky at night. Avoid some places like Upper Sakponba Road, Evbuotubu, and certain parts of Ikpoba Hill after dark. Stick to well-lit and busy areas, and be mindful of who you ask questions at Night.  Late night walks is generally not advisable in Nigeria as a whole, following the current situation of the country.

NAVIGATING THE CITY

Public transportation in Benin includes buses and tricycles (popularly called ‘keke’). Buses is the legally acceptable transport system in the entire city irrespective of distance, while small underdeveloped areas uses the tricycle and some motorcycles in areas where bus can’t enter as a result of bad roads. Always negotiate fares before boarding to avoid being overcharged.  

PREPARE FOR THE WEATHER

Benin City has a tropical climate, so expect hot and humid conditions. Pack lightweight clothing and an umbrella, especially during the rainy season.

Almost Everything happens in excess, the sun is horribly intense during the dry season while the rainy season comes with heavy downpour almost all the time.
